Investments in handling of wind turbines

Port of Uddevalla has built up a close cooperation with most major wind turbine manufacturers over the past fifteen years, such as; Siemens Gamesa, Enercon, Nordex and Vestas. We discharged the very first rotor blades here at Uddevalla in 2006. Since then the development has been astonishing and up until today we have handled hundreds and hundreds of wind turbine parts over the quays in our port.

The wind turbines are transported by the vessels divided in to several sections, to be manageable for loading and discharging. As the rotor blades has grown longer, the towers becomes taller and the nacelles (generators) becomes more powerful, the various parts of a wind turbine also becomes heavier. The heaviest tower sections and nacelles weighs over 90 tons each. This, of course, places great demands on both our staff and on the equipment we use to lift and move the various parts between the different areas of the port.

Volumes moved from road to sea

Yara International, one of our major customers, recently changed the mode of transport for their volumes that passes between Porsgunn in Norway and Port of Uddevalla. These volumes, which were previously transported by truck to Uddevalla, are transported by sea instead.

With this change, the strain on the road network and the environment has been reduced by approximately 325 truck transports per year. This change also means more cost-effective transports for our customer. We are very pleased about this change made possible by Yara, and of course - our contribute to reduce our environmental impact.

New coat of paint for crane nr 32

The project of painting crane nr 32 has now started. We took the opportunity to paint the crane's arm parts, when they were lifted down for replacing of the bearings during last summer. This time the crane will be painted from the roof of the machine house and all the way down to the ground.

The scaffold builders where first up and started building during week 23. When the scaffoldings are finished, Midroc Alucrom will carry out the painting work. Work is expected to be completed around week 32.

100% are happy at work

Every year all of our employees are offered a voluntary health exam through our occupational health service, as part of our preventive work for the work environment.

The health exam includes a survey that focuses on both physical and mental health. One of the things that is addressed in the survey is job satisfaction. We are very happy and proud that the survey shows, for the second year in a row, that 100% of our employees are happy and enjoys working with us.

Great progress in the repair of the Sörvik quay

Renovation of our largest quay at Sörvik began at the end of March. Work is now in full swing and the first phase, out of of two, is expected to be completed in August. Skanska, who performs the work, has now drilled holes in the quay deck to be able to reinforce the concrete beams below the quay. Besides reinforcing the beams the renovation also includes; replacing the L-supports with deeper variants and laying a new reinforced concrete layer on the quay, among other things.

With this repair, Sörvik's largest quay is secured for a long time to come. It also means we can fully utilize our newest investments, as we will be able to work with heavier machines on the quay from now on. The work is expected to be fully completed in December.

Below are some pictures from the ongoing renovation.

Good economic start of the year

Our interim financial statements as of April 30 has now been reported to our owners, the Municipality of Uddevalla. For the first third of this year we can report a good result of SEK 2,684,000. This is a significant increase compared to our budget.

Freight volumes over quay are also above budget and, as of April 30th, they sum up to 385 thousand tons.

This year's summer personnel

The holiday season is here and as usual this means that our summer staff is now on site to help you. This year, you will meet a great mix of both new and familiar faces, at our various departments.

Read about us in Dagens Industri

We are included in Uddevalla Municipality's special appendix to the newspaper Dagens Industri. In the appendix we and our owners talk about our future plans, as part of Uddevalla's future.

Project - "The Journey West" has begun

Our project - The Journey West, has now finally taken off. The start of this project intends the industrial area in Fröland to slowly but surely, be planned out based on the needs of the industry. As their needs consist of making new areas of land avaliable in Uddevalla. Sweden's need for logistical innovation is an important prerequisite for the avaliability of sustainable transports and for us to be able to offer good service to our customers.

Uddevalla Hamnterminal will continue to manage the operation of the port area Fröland. The municipality of Uddevalla is the owner and responsible developer of the new area, consisting of approximately 15 ha of hardened industrial land. This area will be placed in close proximity to the port area.

- This is an important long-term strategic roadmap, which will benefit both urban development and existing as well as new industrial establishments in Uddevalla, says Patrik Petré, Strategic manager at the Municipal Executive Office

Summer greeting from our CEO

We will forever remember this year because of the Corona-virus, all it´s consequenses and all the things we changed to limit the spread of it. Unfortunately the pandemic still seems to be far from over and a lot of things are out of the ordinary for most of us. However, there are some things that inevitably will be the same. One of them being that we have the summer holidays just around the corner.

It has been an intense spring for us at Port of Uddevalla and this years first interim financial statements is a proof of that. Our volumes of goods were also well above the expectations that we had set in our budget. The Corona crisis has not yet resulted in any major loss in freights volumes on our part and for this I am very grateful. There are however reasons to worry about the second half of 2020 and, unfortunately, some of our customers have been hit harder by the crisis.

We are committed to continuing to keep the port up and running as usual for all the needs that exist in our market, even though the world is a bit upside down. For cargo owners, manufacturers, shipping companies, exporters and importers. This is a great feeling to carry with me, during the holiday times!

A lot of exciting challenges are going on in our business development at the moment. The core of our business, which is to serve our customers in the short and long term, always keeps us on our toes. The development of the port areas of Sörvik and Fröland must match a sustainable future, while the logistics needs of the industry needs to be satisfied during the whole process.

Together with our owners, the municipality of Uddevalla, we have started planning the development of Sörvik and Fröland. This development project is part of a more extensive project the city is running in the port area, The development of Sörvik and Fröland are the most important part of this project for us. Other parts of the project includes us leaving the Badö and the Bäve area. Those areas will then become available, in accordance with the municipality's intentions to expand the city westwards.

Last but not least I want to take the opportunity, to wish you all a really wonderful summer. Enjoy it, but don't forget to stay safe and keep your distance. I look forward seeing you all after the holidays, with new energy and charged batteries, ready for all the challenges that this autumn will bring us!

Ulf Stenberg, CEO
