We present our new marketing manager!

Our new marketing manager, Jacob Engholm, took up this position with Uddevalla Hamnterminal in early June. Jacob was earlier employed at DFDS, where he has worked at various positions for thirty years

Jacob sees an important task in spreading the knowledge of Port of Uddevalla and what we can offer the market. He wants Uddevalla to be on every buyer's list, if they are in need of shipping or terminal services.

- Something that I think can come in handy here is that I am patient. I know things can take time, sometimes several years. But when the customer is ready, I want Port of Uddevalla to be the first thing that comes to their mind! It is important to have a good balance between nurturing the existing customers and growing with the new ones. By listening to the customer’s needs, we can prepare for what is to come in the future.

Jacob welcomes those who are curious about what Uddevalla Hamnterminal can offer to contact him, and with that we wish him a warm welcome to us!

We will be Sweden´s most flexible port

This is our new vision - which challenges us, brings us together and helps us to create opportunities for the future

We are an enabler in society - for the industry, for the people who live in our area and for the environment.

We always look around the corner - we help future businesses, paving the way for them to grow by tailoring and creating opportunities. In this way, we are also an attractive employer and logistics partner.

We put Uddevalla on the map in the future society - by offering sustainable logistics.

Wind turbine parts transported with domestic sea freight

Parts for wind turbines has been discharged in Uddevalla for projects in Sweden this spring. The heaviest and largest of the tower sections are, due to their size, difficult to transport by road

For the second year in a row, we loaded these parts on to vessels to go by domestic sea freight. M/V Wilson Ghent and M/V Hendrik S have made a total of 13 trips from Uddevalla, up the Göta Älv to Kristinehamn. Kristinehamn is also the tower sections final station, as this is where the building sites are located.

This is an excellent example of how we can use our domestic waterways for transportation of goods.

New start for export of anchor chain from Uddevalla

We welcome Ramnäs Bruk and Gävle Skeppsklarering back to Port of Uddevalla for export of anchor chain. Ramnäs Bruk manufactures and exports anchor chain to the offshore industry. Gävle Skeppsklarering is the freight forwarder of Ramnäs Bruk. They manage the logistic planning, from the manufacturer through Port of Uddevalla and on to the end customer

The chain manufactured by Ramnäs consists of large and robust chains that will hold up for extreme situations like tough sea and heavy winds. If an oil rig were to tear or sink, this would mean a question of life or death for all the staff who lives and work aboard the oil rig. It would of course also mean an economic disaster for the oil rig owners. Therefore, it is no wonder that the offshore industry is an industry with very high demands on quality. There are only five suppliers of anchor chains to the offshore industry worldwide, one of these being Ramnäs Bruk.

Cyclical fluctuations have, for a couple of years, meant tough times for Ramnäs. The commodity price of oil has been low in the recent years and this has meant that fewer oil platforms have been built. In Uddevalla, we have seen on a close distance how this has also affected other companies. For example, we have had a number of supply vessels for the offshore industry laid up by berth here in Uddevalla during a long period of time.

The commodity price of oil recently went up. Most of the supply vessels has gotten new assignments now and has left Uddevalla for the open sea. The future is also looking brighter for Ramnäs Bruk. Six railway wagons, loaded with three lengths of anchor chain, arrived to Port of Uddevalla at the end of March. These chains were then stored with us on quay, and shipped out in early May. Seeing Ramnäs Bruk back in Uddevalla is dear reunion for us and we look forward to more shipping’s ahead!

Icebreaker Atle visits Port of Uddevalla

Alte is one of the Swedish Maritime Administration's icebreakers, which took a short break with us during June, before her next assignment started

She recently departed to join the Maritime Convoy. A tour that started in Lysekil here on the west coast of Sweden, to continue all the way to Luleå on the east coast. The Maritime convoy is a campaign aiming to highlight shipping and attracting more people to seek employment at sea.

A similar recruitment campaign was carried out in 2008. Then we had the icebreaker Ymer visiting us here in Uddevalla, she was berthed by quay out at Svenskholmen during the summer. With the same purpose as this one, the campaign in 2008 had the effect that was desired. Shortly after the campaign, the interest and number of applicants for the nautical educational programs increased highly.

Pictured below is a guided tour aboard M/V Alte, for employees of Port of Uddevalla, by commander Karl Herlin.

This year's summer personnel are here!

This year there are eleven of them and as usual, they are a huge contribution our stevedore department throughout the whole holiday period

In addition to the eleven people who are summer employees in our stevedoring and forwarding departments, this year we also have extra reinforcement of five students from our previous sponsor class. We followed their class from Norgårdenskolan in Uddevalla from grade 7 until they finished 9th grade this spring.

Before they go of to high school we ended the cooperation with offering five out of the students summer jobs with us, through a draw. These young people will, together with their supervisor, be here with us for three weeks to assist with different types of work in the port.

Uddevalla gets its own sea rescue station!

The Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) opened a sea rescue station in Uddevalla on the 1st of June. This station is Sweden’s 73rd sea rescue station and Port of Uddevalla congratulated them to the opening!

SSRS has had continuous on-call duty in Uddevalla the past two years, but all alarms have up until now gone through Stenungsund's rescue station.

Words from our CEO

With half of the year already behind us, the first culmination of wind turbines has passed through Port of Uddevalla during this spring. We have had 9 vessels discharged and 13 vessel loaded, for further transport within Sweden. There are a number of large projects with wind turbines, all of which will be discharged and distributed from Uddevalla in our future planning. It is great to know that already this autumn there is a new culmination in sight!

We have had a good start to this year, even though the beginning was somewhat slower than expected. However, the forecast for the rest of the year remains unchanged in our budget, which means that we expect to handle about one million tons in 2019.

The work of shaping the logistic areas around Fröland has now intensified for us. In three years, after 2022, it will be possible to establish new, and already familiar establishments in the area. Plans are also to eventually move certain existing businesses from the inner harbor to this area. We will devote considerable resources, with a focus on those who have connections to sea freight, to make Fröland an effective logistic area.

It is it is always a difficult puzzle to get the staffing together during times for holidays. To help us keeping stability we are fortunate enough to have our summer employees here every year. So that half of our ordinary workforce can enjoy their well-deserved holiday.

We also have launched a new vision that will help our company stand strong in the future, when we will be Sweden's most flexible port!

My best wishes for a good summer!

Ulf Stenberg, CEO
