Technology and renewable energy transactions

With Brexit talks, the election of Trump and elections in several EU member states, 2017 has been a year where global political uncertainty has become the market norm. Despite the overall drop in M&A activity globally, Norway has seen a high deal flow in the third quarter with 53 deals in total – the highest volume in the last two years*.

The energy, mining & utilities sector is among the strongest sector performers**, and CLP has been involved in a number of transactions in the sector in 2017. Worth particular mention is that CLP assisted Fortum in connection with the largest-ever transaction in the Norwegian utilities sector - the public-to private and subsequent restructuring of the Hafslund group. As seen over the past few years, nearly every industry is affected by technological innovation, and one out of every five transactions has a clear link to some form of technology***. Among others, this has been reflected in a rise of number of technology transactions that CLP has assisted on within the renewable energy sector.

Further, the IT sector continues to be a popular segment for private equity investors, and the Nordics have been one of the main drivers of increased private equity activity in Europe this year****. CLP has had roles in many of this year’s technology transactions. Some of the most notable technology and renewable energy deals we have been involved in are listed below:
