Mental health issues affect many employees and employers and can lead to absence from work, operational problems and decreased productivity.

Scottish Engineering has invited guest speakers from the following organisations:

Headtorch - an organisation which aims to help employers and employees to create an environment conducive to positive mental health at work.

MacOH - an occupational health provider employing both nursing staff and doctors.

These speakers will discuss with the attendees, how to avoid mental health problems at work and also how to get the best out of an occupational health referral in cases involving mental health. They will also speak about the work carried out by their respective organisations and attendees will have an opportunity to engage with their representatives.

Scottish Engineering will also participate in the session to tackle the issue of the practical management of employees with mental health problems both at work and in relation to absences from work.

While ultimately prevention is better than cure, information will be provided on how to tackle both.

Our Speakers -

Amy McDonald -  Founder and CEO of Headtorch

Amy McDonald is the Founder and CEO of Headtorch and pioneers in the field of mental health at work. Amy started working in this area 15 years ago and always achieved great results. The question became how to scale the work she was doing which lead to the birth of Headtorch.

Lyn Keogh -  Director of  MacOH

Occupational Health is a branch of medicine which specialises in the relationship between work and health. It is essentially an advisory service, providing advice to both employee and employer.  Its main objectives are:

  • To identify and help prevent illness caused by work
  • To advise on the fitness of an employee to do their job
  • To improve and maintain the health of the workforce to the mutual benefit both employee and employer

MacOH have the best OH doctors and nurses and therefore have a wealth of knowledge of the workplace and its hazards, as well as a clear understanding of the worker and his/her state of health and can fulfil the requirements of both.

The OH practitioner is neither on the side of the employer, nor on the side of the employee, but an independent objective specialist assessing and advising on what appears best for both employee and employer, in relation to a person’s health and their work.

MacOH Occupational Health is a sort of “medical bridge” between the employer and its business needs, its employee and their state of health.
