Culturability BSR – Culture and Sustainability in the Baltic Sea Region
“Culturability BSR” unites sustainability and culture through the involvement of creative entrepreneurs, designers and artists from the entire Baltic Sea Region. The project is designed as a platform for the development and initiation of common projects within social innovation, the creative industries and city planning. The aim is to exchange knowledge about how culture works as a driver for sustainability within various spheres, such as education, economy and science. The intercultural dialogue and cooperation takes place between equal partners which ensures a healthy and sustainable future for the project.

The long-term aim is not simply to raise awareness among EU politicians about culture and sustainability; the aim is also to involve people in each country, region and city in the process. The project is a fine example of how intercultural exchange and dialogue can take place and reinforce a sustainable relationship between partners, both on an international and a local level

The groundwork for ”Culturability BSR” (Culture and Sustainability in the Baltic Sea Region) started in 2006 with “sustainability” and “culture” as central themes. Both are essential themes for DCI in the Baltics, and focus was on how to incorporate these themes locally through design and fashion. The work led to the project “Culturability BSR”, which includes the five Nordic countries, the three Baltic, Poland and Germany.

In 2014, workshops were held in different locations in the EU. Experts, creative industries and representatives from the above-mentioned spheres met to discuss and develop proposals for the project. During the last workshop in Copenhagen, projects “Gooddeed” and “Gaming for Sustainable Development, GUTS, Greenbox and Upcycling Fashion” were chosen as the main themes.

The project continued in 2015, and several workshops and conferences were held in order to expand the network of “Culturability BSR” and create awareness of the project in the EU. In June, a workshop took place in Jurmala, Latvia, as part of a larger EU conference. Here participants discussed the use of gaming and Minecraft as a potential and workable tool for creating not only awareness of sustainability and culture, but also how to involve children, youth and adults in the project on a local level.

The project is held by The Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Riga as project manager and DCI as the leading consultant and idea developer.  It is a European Union Baltic Sea Region Flagship Project.
